Sam Phillips, born January 5, 1923 in Florence, AL, founded the Memphis Recording Service in Memphis two days before his 27th birthday in 1950. That service eventually became Sun Records and with Phillips at the helm as producer and talent scout the label brought us early recordings from B.B. King, Howlin’ Wolf, Ike Turner, Rufus Thomas, Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison and many other iconic musicians from the rock ‘n’ roll and rockabilly era.
