Talisk and Spell Songs!
Talisk is a hot group out of Scotland featuring Mohsen Amini, (BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Musician of the Year) on concertina, Graeme Armstrong on guitar, and Benedict Morris, (BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the Year) on fiddle. They play a fiery mix of tunes that will astound you. Talisk is a well-known band in the UK and Ireland and I’m glad they’re now on a US tour. They will be at Passim in Cambridge, Ma on Wed. March 2 at 7 PM, and at the Spire Center for the Performing Arts in Plymouth, MA on Sat. March 5 at 8 PM. Talisk released their first album, Abyss in 2016 and their 2nd album, Beyond in 2018 and will soon release a third, Echo! Check them out on YouTube.
Spell Songs is a group of Scottish musicians including Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, Seckou Keita, Kris Drever, Kerry Andrew, Rachel Newton, Beth Porter and Jim Molyneux. Their album, Let The Light In, is a musical companion piece to two books: The Lost Words, published 2017, and The Lost Spells, published 2020, by author Robert Macfarlane and artist Jackie Morris. The songs and poetry celebrate appreciating all things wild in nature. Spell Songs’ music blends beautiful Scottish harmonies and Senegalese singing with trad-sounding tunes on electroharp, cello, Indian harmonium and the Kora. This is gorgeous, different Scottish music! Check out https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2021/12/spell-songs-ii-let-the-light-in/
