Brian Thompson is Professor of French and Director of Le Centre National de la Chanson at UMass Boston. He first learned French through songs and wrote a book about why and how to teach language and culture through song, La Clef des chants: La Chanson dans la classe de francais. He produced a series of 10 hours of cable TV on French singer-songwriters, L’Air Du Temps, and used the name again for a major Boston-area festival of music from the French-speaking world from 1993 through 1998. He continues to organize concert series with visiting French artists and co-produces and co-hosts a weekly radio show, French Toast, on MIT radio. On other fronts, he is an internationally known scholar (especially of writers Andre Malraux and Francois Mauriac) and the founder and president of a nonprofit corporation working with inner-city young people, Earthen Vessels , which is now in its 25th year. Ayant appris le francais par la chanson, il a crit un livre, La Clef des chants: La Chanson dans la classe de francais, pour expliquer pourquoi et comment enseigner langue et culture par la chanson. Il a produit une serie de 10 heures de television par cable sur des auteurs-compositeurs francais, L’Air du temps, nom qul a donn aussi un festival de musique de l’espace francophone qul a organis aux alentours de Boston de 1993 en 1998. Il continue organiser des sˆries de concerts avec des oiseaux de passage et il est co-producteur et co-animateur d’une mission de readio hebdomadaire, French Toast, la radio du MIT (wmbr.org). Sur d’autres fronts, il est internationalement connu pour ses travaux sur Andr Malraux et Francois Mauriac. Il est galement fondateur et president d’une association caritatif qui travaille aupres des jeunes du centre-ville, Earthen Vessels (earthen-vessels.org), qui ftera ses 25 ans ce 9 novembre au Langham Hotel (l’ex-Mridien).
