Joan's mix of music and lyrical commentary creates an emotional landscape.

Each show begins with a theme of some kind. "I usually think of a few ideas—but once I'm in the show it could go a different way." Joan said.

She compares this kind of muse-based approach to the way a seasoned musician approaches a concert. "Most performers I know have a set list that they totally ignore once they start their concerts," Joan said. "They're very in the moment."

About the host . . .

Joan Orr returned to WUMB's airwaves in 2004 after an absence of over a decade. While she was away Joan had a number of on-air stints at other station, most recently at Marshfield's WATD.

Joan is originally from the New York City area and moved to Boston in the late 1970s.

The early beginnings of FM radio first sparked her interest in broadcasting, Joan said. "I love the magic of the medium. Not many people get to do this!" Being on the air "is almost a calling," she says. "And you have to listen to that voice that calls you. You can't ignore it."

Joan is currently on a study sabbatical in London; she regularly produces specials for WUMB.

Joan lives on the Cape. She has owned and run the Art House Gallery in Brewster, Mass. since the mid '90s.
