Nominate yourself, or someone you know to be a member of the WUMB Friends Council
The WUMB Friends Council currently has several openings and would love to welcome some enthusiastic and hard-working individuals to the Council. The Friends Council is a hands-on as well as an advisory group supporting WUMB. Our Council meets four times a year, at the radio station in UMass Boston, and our three committees meet as needed to work on projects. Our members plan, manage, and carry out various projects during the year, primarily focused in three areas: fundraising, community service, and outreach.
FUNDRAISING: There are two main areas for our fundraising. One is the Capital Campaign, the purpose of which is to raise funds for a major station build-out and improvements in technological capacities. The other is regular fundraising for day-to-day expenses. WUMB relies on listener donations for most of its operating budget.
COMMUNITY SERVICE: As a public radio station and part of UMass Boston, WUMB has made a commitment to provide services to the community. We have had warm clothing drives, cell phone drives and various support activities for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
OUTREACH: We regularly brainstorm with the station staff to devise ways in which to increase listernership and membership in the station. Most recently, we came up with ideas for increasing Internet listening and for outreach to local coffeehouses.
We are looking for people of diverse backgrounds. The names and brief biographical descriptions of our current members can be found on the overview page. Members should be listeners of and ideally members of WUMB. They must be willing to make a commitment to attend and fully participate in Friends Council meetings and to work on projects throughout the year. Our projects, on average, require several hours a month of work in addition to our regular quarterly meetings. Being a member of the Friends Council is not just work, as satisfying as that is. We are also invited to attend various functions and events put on by the station during the year.
Members serve three year terms, which are staggered so that approximately one third of the members terms expire each year. Members may serve up to two three-year terms. If you are interested in applying or want to nominate someone else, please complete the application form here. We are particularly interested in members to work on community service projects and on ways to increase our listenership and membership. We would like to have applications submitted no later than Monday, July 9th so the screening committee can review them by mid-July.
Being a member of the Friends Council is work but it is a lot of fun and provides great satisfaction in assisting a unique radio station.
